About Kirk’s Natural
Since 1839, Kirk’s Original Coco Castile Soap has given its consumers a high quality, natural soap at an affordable price. Kirk’s Natural believes that everyone should have the opportunity to wash with natural soaps. Instead of charging specialty item prices often found on most natural products, Kirk’s is happy to give their customers the low prices they can trust. Its founding principles date back to its creator and family man himself, James S. Kirk.
James S. Kirk, founder of Kirk’s Original Coco Castile Soap, was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1818. Kirk was the son of a prominent shipbuilder and civil engineer. His family migrated to the Montreal, Canada when he was only six months old. In his teens, Kirk was introduced to soap and candle manufacturing. At the age of twenty-one, he married his true love and was inspired to create the James S. Kirk & Company in Utica, New York. He produced a brood of seven sons, many of whom were later involved in the family business. The Kirk family lived and worked in South Evanston, Illinois until his death in 1886. It was said that “there never was a resident of Chicago who was more highly respected and esteemed.”
When it comes to your family’s bath time, generations trust Kirk’s Original Coco Castile Soap & full product line. Kirk’s Natural is pleased to provide American families with high quality, affordable, natural soap!
James S. Kirk & Company and Beyond
1859 A Tale of Two CitiesIn 1859, Kirk’s relocates from Utica, New York to Chicago and sets up shop. The plant was located on North Water Street in Chicago, Illinois. The massive five story building was situated along the banks of the Chicago River and was served by a railroad spur that connected it to every railroad in Chicago. With the exception of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, it quickly became the largest manufacturer of soap both in Chicago and the United States. Kirk's operating divisions were laundry soap, toilet soap, perfumes, colognes, toilet waters and glycerine. By 1900, Kirk’s was producing over 100 million pounds of soap per year!
1930 Kirk's is on the MoveIn 1929, the James S. Kirk company was purchased by Procter and Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ultimately, the five story building located on North Water Street was demolished. The soap continued to be made and distributed without interruption. In 1996, Kirk’s Natural Product Corporation acquires Kirk’s Coco Hardwater Soap from Procter & Gamble and Kirk’s returns to its native home.
2005 Kirk's Finds A HomeIn 2005, Kirk’s becomes Kirk’s Natural and relocates to Erlanger, Kentucky. Kirk's is now located across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Today, Kirk’s is very proud to be family-owned and operated, producing a castile line of products that are cruelty-free and manufactured in the USA.
